We were delighted to host our Cyber Security Essentials for Smaller Businesses event last month, and to welcome so many small business owners and decision‑makers who are grappling with the realities of cybersecurity today.
From the outset, our aim was simple: to make cybersecurity practical, relevant, and achievable for smaller organisations. Too often, cyber security conversations are framed around enterprise‑level threats and solutions. We wanted to focus instead on the real challenges SMEs face, limited time, limited resources, and uncertainty about where to start.
A key focus of the session was Cyber Essentials. We know that many businesses are aware of the term, but not always clear on what the certification actually involves or why it has become so important. By breaking this down into plain language, we aimed to show how Cyber Essentials supports risk reduction, builds customer confidence, and increasingly plays a role in winning contracts and meeting insurance requirements.
Throughout the event, we deliberately kept the conversation grounded in reality. Rather than presenting a “perfect world” approach to security, we focused on sensible, practical steps that organisations can take right now to improve their security posture. Our goal was to leave attendees feeling informed and empowered, not overwhelmed.
One of the highlights for us was running the Cyber Escape Room challenge. This interactive element brought cyber risks to life in a way that presentations alone can’t always achieve. It sparked great discussion and demonstrated how human behaviour, awareness, and decision‑making play a critical role in cyber security, particularly in smaller teams where everyone wears multiple hats.

Overall, the event reaffirmed something we strongly believe at Capella: cybersecurity doesn’t have to be complex or inaccessible to be effective. With the right foundations, clear guidance, and a focus on essentials, smaller businesses can significantly improve their resilience to cyber threats.
We’d like to thank everyone who joined us and contributed to the discussion. If this event is any indication, there is a real appetite among SMEs for practical, honest conversations about cyber security, and we look forward to continuing those conversations in future sessions.
